The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) has launched its new Tidal API platform, with expanded coverage to include not only the UK coastline, but also Ireland, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.
Tidal API is a modernised version of UK Tidal API and a significant step forward from its UK-only predecessor, based on extensive research and development, as well as feedback from customers.
The service is one of the largest authoritative sources of tidal height predictions for standard and secondary tidal level stations and tidal stream locations, using the most accurate and reliable data to ensure that small chart users have access to the tidal predictions they require.
The launch of Tidal API reinforces the UKHO’s capabilities for supporting the maritime community, embodying its values of ensuring the safety of life at sea (SOLAS) with safe and seamless data and tools.
What is changing?
This new authoritative source allows for more efficient delivery of data, while additionally delivering tidal stream and tidal height graph capabilities to the Foundation and Premium tiers of Tidal API.
These two subscription options have been upgraded to include tidal data for Ireland, in addition to UK waters, as well as Northern Ireland, The Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. In more detail:
Tidal API – Foundation provides a one-year subscription to access current tidal information plus 13 days’ worth of tidal height and stream events for a wide range of tidal height stations and stream locations around Great Britain and Ireland. This includes Northern Ireland, The Isle of Man and The Channel Islands consisting of the Bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey.
Tidal API – Premium provides access to historical and the current plus one years’ worth of tidal events and interval predictions for a wide range of tidal height stations and stream locations around Great Britain and Ireland. This includes Northern Ireland, The Isle of Man and The Channel Islands consisting of the Bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey.
By rolling out new functionality and enhancing the geographic coverage available within our paid-for Tidal APIs, we can better support our mobile app developer customers and small craft users with access to the tidal data they require.
The next steps
All current UK Tidal API Foundation and Premium subscribers wishing to continue using this service are encouraged to take either of the following actions:
- Existing users can purchase a new, separate subscription to the Tidal API - either Foundation or Premium products - which will both provide a wide range of tidal height stations and stream locations.
- Existing users can wait until their current subscription ends and re-start a new subscription with the expanded coverage offered by Tidal API.
In line with our wider move to enhance our tidal product portfolio, Tidal API complements the ADMIRALTY EasyTide platform, which has been designed to provide free access to seven-days’ tidal predictions for more than 600 UK port locations.
